The Kiha 40 series is a general-purpose diesel car that was introduced in 1977. Among the Kiha 40 series, the Kiha 40 type is characterized by its dual driver's cabs and single-wing passenger doors. The Kiha 40 500 series is a cold-climate vehicle with side windows that drop at the top and rise at the bottom. It was mainly used in Tohoku, but some cars were also used in Chubu and Nagano. The 500 series has different window and seat arrangements and the shape of the side vertical rain gutters depending on the time of manufacture.
